Join Us for a Tour of Ghana Featuring Its Vibrant and Culturally Rich Akwasidae Festival!

The Republic of Ghana is a West African country located along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. It shares borders with Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, and Togo to the east. Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to do so.

The country has a diverse culture with over 70 ethnic groups, including the Akan, Mole-Dagbani, Ewe, and Ga-Dangme. English is the official language, though many local languages, such as Twi, Fante, and Dagbani, are widely spoken.

The Akwasidae Festival is one of the most significant and vibrant traditional celebrations among the Ashanti people (a sub-group of the Akan) of Ghana, typically held every 42 days (about every six weeks). The festival is rooted in the Ashanti Kingdom's rich cultural heritage and history.  Its main purpose is to honor the ancestors, celebrate Ashanti traditions, and renew bonds with the royal family.

Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley in the historic city of Staunton, Virginia, the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse has delighted hundreds of thousands from all over the world. A product of years of research, the playhouse was built in 2001 as a replica of the original Blackfriars.  The Blackfriars Playhouse is open year-round for performances of Shakespeare’s plays and contemporary works in productions hailed by The Washington Post as “shamelessly entertaining.”

Watch as family ties unravel and power takes a dark turn in Shakespeare’s King Lear. When Lear’s decision to divide his kingdom spirals into betrayal and madness, father and daughters are pitted against each other in a story of loyalty, loss, and redemption. This gripping tragedy will leave you reflecting on the fragile bonds that hold families together.
